Missing Links: Vote For Beer

Thank you for absentee balloting and early voting. Nothing is more democratic than being able to choose which way you'd like to vote. I was relieved to place my absentee ballot in the mail and be done with it. The ads encouraging me to vote were really starting to bother me, especially P. Diddy’s “Vote or I’ll Kill You” campaign and the one where a list of famous actors say, “Don’t vote” a thousand freakin’ times. Frankly, none of them were really effective. If they were smart, they would have understood it is really simple to get people to vote. Just offer them a free beer.

Missing Links: The Honest Pint Project

On Sunday night, I was watching the Red Sox-Rays game at a bar and ordered a pint. The waitress returned to take our food order and I asked her to switch my order from a pint to a 20-ounce. The menu offered two sizes, a pint for $4.50 and a 20-ounce for $5.50. I was thirsty and rationalized the dollar was worth four more ounces of beer (I know, bars love when you do this). Soon the waitress brought back my 20-ounce beer. I grabbed the glass and started to take a sip when I noticed there was about an inch and half of space between the rim of the glass and the beer. I put the glass down and glared at it for a moment. I figured she poured the pint first and then dumped it into the 20-ounce glass, the foam made it seem like 20 ounces of beer, or the bartender just wa ...

Missing Links: There's Lightning in Prague

I'm looking forward to the start of the hockey season on Saturday when the Tampa Bay Lightning play the New York Rangers in Czech Republic. The second of two games airs Sunday at noon on VERSUS. So...wake up, read your newspaper online with your starbucks coffee and watch the future of the NHL, an international league played in a foreign land.

What's Brewing: Porter Beer Bar

At The Porter Beer Bar in Inman Park is another Oktoberfest celebration. Left Hand Oktoberfest, Dogtoberfest and Spaten Oktoberfest are only $3, and they're serving three delicious German specials involving beer in the recipe. With really only a game or two worth watching this weekend, I may have to visit The Porter.

What's Brewing: Oktoberfest Celebrations in the Southeast

I missed it again. On Sunday, Oktoberfest ends in the beer capital of the world, Munich, Germany. Not to worry, the last days of the 200-year old festival, originally held in honor of the Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig’s marriage to Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen, mark the beginning of a wonderful month for beer drinkers in the Southeast. There are a multitude of festivals in the region, the first coming this weekend. I’ve complied a complete list of all the festivals this month. Cheers!

Missing Links: Fullsteam Ahead

The guys from Pop The Cap, a nonprofit established to help change the craft-beer laws in North Carolina, are beginning another venture: Fullsteam Brewery & Tavern. Based in Durham the brewery will be the first in the region to offer beer made with a "distinctly Southern brewing style, experimenting with seasonal farmed goods and heirloom grains in the brewing process." The site is pretty cool too.

What’s Brewing: An Interview with Paul Philippon, founder of The Duck-Rabbit Brewery

It is an exciting time for craft-beer drinkers in the Southeast. The market is expanding faster than anywhere else in the country and Southeast brewers are experimenting with a variety of styles and ingredients, making myriad tasty beers. Every month we’ll feature a craft brewery or brewpub in the Southeast and chat with the brewmaster about his or her craft. If you have any suggestions (a brewery or brewpub in the Southeast), please email Jamie by clicking here.

In August, we talked with Brian “Spike” Buckowski at Terrapi ...

Missing Links: The Rays Sellout!

Or should it read the Rays fans are sellouts? I thought they'd keep boycotting games for no particular reason but it appears the Tampa Bay area loves its Rays. No, I'm just kidding. At least they're better than Atlanta fans. We can't even sellout a playoff game.

TV: My College Football Schedule

Noon – Florida Atlantic at Michigan State – ESPN2
I like the Owls upsetting the Spartans.

3:30 – Georgia Tech at Virginia Tech – ABC
If Georgia Tech wins, they should be in the Top 25.

3:30 – Georgia at South Carolina – CBS
It is Georgia’s chance to make a statement in Columbia. If you are there, look for SportsUnlimited.

7:00 – Auburn at Mississippi State – ESPN2
Auburn’s new offense clashes with Mississippi State’s defense. This is always a good game (not for Auburn fans!), especially in Starkville.

What are you watching this w ...
