Missing Links: Having A Nooner?

You want a beer for lunch but you don’t want something that puts you to sleep the moment you return to your desk. Craft brewers are now making tasty low-alcohol beer.

I'm Back!

Introduction: I'm Back

I’m back. It’s been about three weeks since my last post. But, in my defense, I’ve been busy traveling around the Southeast (and Massachusetts on vacation) and writing and editing the football issue. It previews the upcoming college and pro seasons. I wrote about the football program in Troy, Ala., Pinehurst Resort’s Buddy Trip of a Lifetime, Gaby’s By The Lake, the Ritz Carlton’s newest lakeside restaurant, a book review of the “75 Years of the SEC” and Mississippi State’s young qua ...

Bars & Brewpubs: The Garage Cafe - Birmingham

Bars & Brewpubs: The Garage Cafe - Birmingham

It's a steamy summer night in Birmingham. We've just finished dinner on the patio at Bottega (a restaurant I would highly recommend if you're in the city and in the mood for northern Italian. It's a little pricey but definitely worth it.) and are ready for a beer. We head to the Garage Cafe with the advice of a local friend.

From the outside it looks any other dive bar.
The interior is small and dark and the u-shaped wooden bar is weathered like an antique at a flea market. Men sit on stools sipping bottled beers, wa ...

Quiet Persuasion: On The First Days

Nothing surprised me about the first day of SEC Media Days. I knew about the circus surrounding the coaches and the stupid question media members ask them (I'll have a list for you later this week), so I have just a few quick observations from today.

1. I hate to say it but Tim Tebow is a nice guy. He does more for others than most college students. So stop asking him if he has ever had a beer or smoked a cigarette. In truth, does it really matter?

2. Mississippi State sophomore Wesley Carroll looks nothing like a quarterback. To quote Chris Farley,"He's just a little guy." A friend joked, "He looks like Huckleberry Finn." I responded, "You know, they found him on fraternity row. He was throwing a football in fr ...

Missing Links: The Middle School Dance

Watching newspaper writers interact with the coaches and players they openly criticize year round is very entertaining. It's actually one of my favorite things about SEC Football Media Days which begins tomorrow in Birmingham. I'm also interested to see how many 'Bama fans come to The Wynfrey Hotel Thursday morning to catch a glimpse of Nick Saban. Last year it was sad how many grown men took the entire day off of work to see Saban walk through the lobby for half a minute.  But I digress.

Here are the pre-season A ...

Quiet Persuasion: It's Buttery, Not Yellow or Gold

Tired of his opinions being drowned out by louder (often dumber) voices – radio hosts and ESPN analysts – Jamie decided to write them down. Quiet Persuasion, which runs every week, is the result.

Three days. Finally after three days without baseball the games began again Saturday. I don’t know about you but the world of professional sports was rather boring last week. The extra inning All-Star game seemed like it ended months ago. The Tiger-less British Open didn’t start until Thursday. And Ashley Harkleroad’s glamour shots weren’ ...
