Comment on the state of the Grand Ole Game
By Carl Danbury on 6/30/2009 2:19 PM
If this is our National Pastime, than it’s past time to contract the number of teams and players in which MLB exposes to its fans.

Enough of the Outrage of 40-Something Pitchers Being Released
By Carl Danbury on 6/4/2009 9:43 AM
Braves fans, which now number less than the population of Dacula, who were outraged that the disloyal Braves didn't re-sign John Smoltz during the off season, now have more reason to lament the release of another link to Atlanta's glory days. 43-year-old Tom Glavine was unceremoniously dumped in favor of young gun Tommy Hanson. So, what's the problem?

Two Game 7s in One Night: I Must Be Dreaming
By Carl Danbury on 4/27/2009 2:58 PM
While ice hockey certainly doesn't translate well on television for novice fans, for the purists among us (and those blessed with HDTV), the opportunity to watch two Game 7s in one night is worthy of a meaningful celebration. I'm not talking just popcorn with butter, either!

It's Not Easy Being the Runner-Up!
By Carl Danbury on 4/3/2009 5:27 PM
Making it to the final game or final playoff series during the previous season is no guarantee for future success — in fact it's quite the opposite. Teams that have made the championship game or series one year, seldom come back to win a championship the following year.

Basketball Coaching Hires: Where do we go from here?
By Carl Danbury on 4/2/2009 12:41 PM
We all have our opinions about head basketball coaches and the schools that made the best hires. In this age of instant gratification in college football and college basketball, the coaches hired for the short term aren't always the best solution for the long term. Kentucky learned that the hard way when it hired Billy Gillespie.

35 Years Ago Tonight: Ali vs. Frazier II
By Carl Danbury on 1/28/2009 5:39 PM
35 years ago tonight, Muhammed Ali and Joe Frazier met in their second of three fights at Madison Square Garden in New York. It was Ali's 17th fight since returning to the ring after his 3 1/2 year exile from boxing. This time neither fighter held the title when they met, because George Foreman destroyed Frazier a year earlier and was training for a bout with Ken Norton. Foreman was 39-0 at that time.

The No Hype League (NHL) and Another All-Star Game Gone Unnoticed
By Carl Danbury on 1/26/2009 2:20 PM
The No Hype League (NHL) spends all of its energies publicizing one game every year, the Outdoor Classic. The all-star game is entertainment for some, possibly for those who never watch hockey on a regular basis, and nothing more. It's no different than the NBA or MLB mid-season games. No sports fan really cares about all star games anymore, so why even go through the exercise in the first place? Give the players a few days off at the trade deadline, and then let each team prepare for the final five weeks of the season — the playoff chase.

Gene Chizik: Auburn's New Head Coach
By Carl Danbury on 12/14/2008 9:13 AM
Tommy Tuberville was 85-40 at Auburn, with a 7-3 won-loss record against cross-state rival Alabama, and an undefeated season in 2004. Today, ESPN.com and the Birmingham News are reporting that former Auburn defensive coordinator and Florida graduate Gene Chizik has been hired as the Tigers head coach. Chizik was 5-19 in two seasons at Iowa State. He also served as assistant head coach at Texas, was defensive coordinator at Central Florida and Stephen F. Austin, and coached at Middle Tenn. State and Clemson.

Here's a College Football Playoff System, Why Wouldn't This One Work?
By Carl Danbury on 12/10/2008 11:02 AM
If you want a playoff system for college football, then several things must happen. First, you must open up a true playoff system to all 11 conference champions. Secondly, if you want a 16-team playoff similar to what the Football Championship Subdivision orchestrates every year, then you are left with five at-large berths to complete the field of 16. That means that the two teams that advance to the championship will play an additional four games. Those teams that reach the semi-finals will have played three extra games, etc. If that's too many for the college presidents to swallow, then simple math tells you that you must decrease the allotment of regular season games teams are allowed to play.

The SEC Coaches Resignation Forum
By Carl Danbury on 12/4/2008 10:53 AM
Phil Fulmer, Tommy Tuberville and Sylvester Croom resigned and each of them in their own way were successful at their respective schools. With Lane Kiffin taking over at UT, and Auburn and Miss. State beginning their exhaustive searches for a new coach, SU wants to know the following: was it shortsighted for these schools to make coaching changes at this point in time? Who should replace Tuberville at Auburn, and can Miss. State find anyone to take their job? Light up the board with your comments. You'll see mine below!
