Tommy Tuberville was 85-40 at Auburn, with a 7-3 won-loss record against cross-state rival Alabama, and an undefeated season in 2004. Today, ESPN.com and the Birmingham News are reporting that former Auburn defensive coordinator and Florida graduate Gene Chizik has been hired as the Tigers head coach. Chizik was 5-19 in two seasons at Iowa State. He also served as assistant head coach at Texas, was defensive coordinator at Central Florida and Stephen F. Austin, and coached at Middle Tenn. State and Clemson.

Here's a College Football Playoff System, Why Wouldn't This One Work? |
|

If you want a playoff system for college football, then several things must happen. First, you must open up a true playoff system to all 11 conference champions. Secondly, if you want a 16-team playoff similar to what the Football Championship Subdivision orchestrates every year, then you are left with five at-large berths to complete the field of 16. That means that the two teams that advance to the championship will play an additional four games. Those teams that reach the semi-finals will have played three extra games, etc.
If that's too many for the college presidents to swallow, then simple math tells you that you must decrease the allotment of regular season games teams are allowed to play.

Phil Fulmer, Tommy Tuberville and Sylvester Croom resigned and each of them in their own way were successful at their respective schools. With Lane Kiffin taking over at UT, and Auburn and Miss. State beginning their exhaustive searches for a new coach, SU wants to know the following: was it shortsighted for these schools to make coaching changes at this point in time? Who should replace Tuberville at Auburn, and can Miss. State find anyone to take their job? Light up the board with your comments. You'll see mine below!

If Croom Couldn't Win at Miss. State, Who Can? |

For a moment, however, lets consider what you're up against at Miss. State. LSU, Alabama, Ole Miss, Arkansas and Auburn are in your division. Two of the head coaches for those programs are charismatic, two are successful wherever they coach and one is trying to re-establish his resume at the collegiate level. Miss. State is located in the least desirable locale, has always been viewed as the bastard child of the SEC West, and even when Jackie Sherrill ran the program, had an identity problem.

The Teixperiment Shows Braves Front Office Has Lost Touch |

Mark Teixeira will no longer be a member of the Atlanta Braves by Thursday. He’s posted some nice numbers since arriving from Texas at the trade deadline last July, but the Braves cumulative record since is a confounding 77-83. The poor record is no reflection on Teixeira. While switch-hitting first basemen who can field their position are nice to pencil in the starting lineup every day, the Braves’ personnel gurus seem to have forgotten that pitching (starting pitching) wins divisions, pennants and World Series championships more often than not.

What happened to the Thrashers on Day One of Free Agency? |

But, for Thrashers' fans who expected a lot from management on Day 1 of free agency, Waddell and Co. failed them miserably. They harken back to the promise of Waddell's "five-year plan," which is now approaching year 10. They point at Waddell for being unable to re-sign Marian Hossa during the season, a top-10 winger who plays hard at both ends of the ice. They point at Waddell's failures to sign valuable free agents in the past, settling for the likes of Bobby Holik, Todd White, Steve Rucchin, Chris Herperger and Jaroslav Modry to name a few.
